Andalucía Recap: RangeGoats GC look to move on from Valderrama
Iconic Real Club Valderrama proved to be a historically tough test for nearly every team at LIV Golf Andalucía. Just ask RangeGoats GC.
The team will look to flush the negatives from Valderrama after a 12th-place finish following three days of challenging conditions that tested some of the world’s best players on one of golf’s most iconic layouts.
In fact, the opening round went down as the toughest day in LIV Golf history. Friday’s field stroke average of 3.519 over par was the highest for any of LIV Golf’s 88 regular-season rounds. Collectively, the field was 190 over, and just one hole played under par, the par-5 11th.
So as disappointed as the team was following Sunday’s final round, it wasn’t the only one to feel dismayed. The team finished at 22-over par for the week and exits Valderrama ninth in the season-long team standings.
Matthew Wolff did his part and has been one of the best storylines across the LIV Golf League since coming to RangeGoats GC in the offseason. He finished T17 at Valderrama, by far the best finish on the team.
Wolff entered No. 16 in the season-long individual standings and didn’t lose much ground, falling only to No. 19. He has finished in the top 16 in his last three events and has a season-best third-place finish six events ago in Miami.
It was a rough week for Wolff’s teammates. Captain Bubba Watson finished T47 and fellow members Peter Uihlein (T38) and Thomas Pieters (T53) had equally frustrating weeks. To Uihlein’s credit, he shot a 6-under 65 on Sunday for one of the day’s better rounds and on the day when all four scores counted. He had opened Friday with a non-counting score of 9-over 80.
After a short break to regroup, the team will be back in action on the LIV Golf League in two weeks at LIV Golf UK at JCB Golf & Country Club.
