RangeGoats Greenbrier recap STORY image

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. - It wasn’t exactly the result RangeGoats Golf Club was looking for in the mountains of West Virginia, but there were plenty of positives from which to draw as the 2024 schedule begins to wind down.

The RangeGoats finished tied for fifth at LIV Golf Greenbrier, just six shots outside of third place, and sit ninth in the season-long team standings. But the team played one of its finest rounds of the season on Sunday, and the confidence is high as the 2024 season begins to wind down.

The team entered the week mathematically eliminated from challenging for a top-3 seed and a bye in the final event. But all is not lost. Following next month’s LIV Golf Chicago, the RangeGoats will be among the 10 teams that will play in the Day 1 quarterfinals at the season-ending Team Championship in Dallas.

As for LIV Golf Greenbrier, the RangeGoats got off to a slow start on Friday when they combined to go 3-under with two players shooting over par. But the team came out aggressive in Round 2 and posted the third-lowest team score of the day with a 15-under total. Captain Bubba Watson caught fire and shot a scorching 7-under 63, which was his lowest career round on the LIV Golf League. It was also the second-lowest score of the day.

Thomas Pieters (65) and Peter Uihlein (67) did their parts on Saturday and contributed counting scores. Matthew Wolff, who has led the team seemingly all season, was also sharp and shot 68, but his score was not needed. Wolff did have the day’s longest drive, a 389-yard rocket.

When adding up both days, RangeGoats GC found itself closer to the middle of the pack entering Sunday rather than trying to fight to get out of the basement. And that’s when the RangeGoats turned it on and was arguably the best team on the course in the final round. The team members shot a combined 18-under on Sunday, which only one other team could match.

Pieters led the way in the final round with a 6-under 64 while Uihlein posted a 5-under 65. Watson continued his stellar play with a 4-under 66 and Matthew Wolff contributed a 3-under 67. With all four scores counting on Sunday, it was a true team effort that showed they weren’t mailing it in.

The team will have nearly a month off before heading to LIV Golf Chicago (Sept. 13-15) at Bolingbrook Golf Club. That’s where the 2024 Individual Champion will be crowned before everyone’s attention shifts to the Team Championship Dallas the following week.
